Getting to The Majlis
How do I get to The Majlis Resort in Lamu?
You can fly to Manda Island (Lamu) from Nairobi, Mombasa, or Malindi. The Majlis provides complimentary speedboat transfers from Manda Airport to the resort. We can also assist with private charter flights upon request.
Can you organize airport pickups from other cities in Kenya?
Yes, we offer tailor-made pickups from major airports like Nairobi or Mombasa, including private charter flight options for those seeking a more direct or luxurious journey.
Bookings, Cancellations & Amendments
How can I make a reservation?
You can book directly via our website, by emailing us at welcome@themajlisresorts.com, or by calling us on +254 720 330 088 / +254 700 211 847 / +254 757 327 777. A booking is confirmed once we receive a valid booking voucher (for tour operators) or a deposit/payment confirmation for direct bookings.
Are the rates per room or per person?
Our rates are per room.
What is your cancellation policy?
Our cancellation policy is as follows: • 90–60 days before arrival: 20% of total booking charged • 60–35 days before arrival: 30% charged • 34–20 days before arrival: 50% charged • 19 days or less / No-show: 100% charged For cancellations, we may issue a credit note valid for 12 months, depending on circumstances.
Can I modify or change my booking after it's been confirmed?
Yes, amendments can be made based on availability. Any rate changes, availability conflicts, or changes in guest numbers will be communicated before re-confirmation. For reductions in guest numbers, our cancellation policy applies.
Do I need to pay in full at the time of booking?
A 20% deposit is required to confirm all bookings. The full balance is due 30 days before arrival. For last-minute bookings (within 30 days), full payment is required at the time of confirmation. The Majlis reserves the right to cancel bookings that have not been paid in full before arrival.
Are there any fees for no-shows, late arrivals or early departures?
Unfortunately, no refunds will be granted for early departures or late arrivals. However, we always aim to provide suitable alternatives where possible.
Stays & Accommodation
What time is check-in and check-out?
Check-in is from 2:00 PM and check-out is by 10:00 AM. Early check-in or late check-out can be arranged based on availability. Late check-outs after 10:30 AM will be charged 50% of the room rate unless prior arrangements have been made.
Is breakfast included in the room rate?
Yes, our rates are typically on a half-board basis, which includes breakfast and either lunch or dinner.
Can I book the entire resort for a private event?
Absolutely. The Majlis can be reserved for exclusive use, ideal for weddings, corporate retreats, or group celebrations, with accommodation for up to 85 guests.
Do you accommodate dietary restrictions?
Yes, our chefs are happy to accommodate dietary needs and preferences. Please let us know in advance.
Payments, Currency & Credit Cards
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept cash, Visa, Mastercard, and most major credit cards. Bank transfers can also be arranged for deposits.
What currency is accepted at the resort?
We accept Kenyan Shillings, as well as major foreign currencies like USD, GBP, and EUR. We recommend exchanging money at banks or official bureaus.
Are credit cards accepted?
Yes, we accept major credit cards. There are also ATMs in Lamu Town for local withdrawals.
Travel, Health & Visa Information
Do I need a visa to visit Kenya?
Most foreign nationals require a visa, which can be obtained on arrival or online before your trip. Your passport should be valid for at least 3 months beyond your arrival date and have at least one blank page.
Is the water safe to drink?
We recommend drinking bottled or filtered water, which is readily available at the resort.
Do I need any vaccinations to visit Kenya?
It's advisable to consult your doctor or a travel clinic before your trip. Yellow fever vaccination may be required depending on your country of origin.
What type of plugs are used in Kenya?
Kenya uses UK-style 3-pin square plugs, with a 220/240V supply. Adapters are available at the resort if needed.
What is the time zone in Lamu?
Kenya is GMT+3 and does not observe daylight saving time.

Is there Wi-Fi at the resort?
Yes, we provide complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the property. We can also arrange for local internet keys if needed.
Can I use my mobile phone in Kenya?
Yes, mobile coverage is strong. Local SIM cards are available for purchase at the airport and in town.
